Update on our review of Bowview Manor This week I noticed how beautifully the food preparation staff plated Mom's pureed dinner. The mound of mashed potatoes looked authentically delicious, with rich brown gravy drizzled over. The pureed squash sat brightly at one side, and the pureed meat was pushed together to (loosely) resemble some pieces of roast beef, with the same gravy drizzled artfully over it. To Mom's fading sight, she saw she had a dinner she loved. Then she was served "Lemon Meringue pie" - without the meringue or crust. She was delighted with the meal. The meal caregiver, Manuel, made her feel like she was a valued patron. The thoughtful plating, and kindness of the server, made Mom's day a little more pleasant! We have so many good things to say about Bowview Manor. It’s 100% long term care, with many Dementia and Alzheimer residents. (Dementia is a horrible disease where the sufferer loses their personality and their brain capacity.) 1. The staff of Diefenbaker Neighborhood learned Mom’s name quickly, and consistently greet her by name. They have been kind when caring for her, even when I find her moods challenging. 2. Within 6 weeks of her moving in, we were invited to a comprehensive health care review. There were six members of her care team who gave a personalized report; including her doctor, nursing team representative, dietitian, physiotherapist, social worker and recreational therapist. 3. When I had questions about Mom’s Dementia progress, the Social Worker provided resources. 4. The Social Workers set up a support group for several of us who are on the same journey of coping with loved ones with Dementia. It was so helpful to realize that we, as family caregivers, were not alone. 5. The facility is bright, clean and well maintained. We are invited to decorate with pictures that are meaningful to our resident. Providing long term care for Dementia residents is not pretty. Often sufferers are angry and feel helpless. The caregivers at Bowview Manor work hard at being kind, at listening, and at remembering each resident deserves respect. Thank you, Bowview Manor, and especially Diefenbaker neighborhood!

My father was admitted to the Crowfoot section of Bow View Manor on June 19, 2024 after a 7 week stay at Foothills Hospital for complications associated with dementia. He was suffering from delusions, delirium and was aggressive at times with hospital staff when they tried to care for his needs. We had no real choice in where he was placed; Bow View Manor was the only available location for his combination of needs in the quadrant of the city which we requested. We were never sure that he was going to make it out of the hospital but the day he arrived at Bow View he rallied and had some of his best days in quite some time. Sadly, he passed away after only a month at Bow View Manor. That said, in those four weeks at Bow View, he was treated exceptionally well. The staff in the Crowfoot section of Bow View were so caring, compassionate, attentive and supportive of both my father and all the family that came to visit him during his brief stay. The facility is well run, has all the facilities you could possibly need to handle the residents needs and the staff do all they can to care for the residents. My dad was treated like he was family by the staff, in fact, one of his nurses actually said; “you are part of our family now.” For privacy reasons I will not name names, but he was cared for by a team of nurses, care aids, doctors and support staff that all had his best interests in mind and these professionals together with the office staff graciously helped us to perform our role as caregivers. As his time with us drew to a close, special attention was given to ensure that he was as comfortable as possible. That personalized care and compassion was extended to his visiting family at all hours of the day and night. One last thing worth mentioning, before my Dad began his final descent, we had him outside on the amazing walking paths directly in front of the facility. The area is beautiful and Bow View has lounges on each floor that face the river for colder months. There is convenient free parking just around the corner from the facility which also was very welcome. I would not hesitate to recommend Bow View for the care needs of your loved one. Caring for relatives with dementia/Alzheimer’s is very difficult and the staff at Bow View do an excellent job in managing this very challenging task. My mother-in-law is in Memory Care in BC and our experience there is not nearly as positive as at Bow View. The staff are integral to the quality of care, and Bow View has amazing staff.

My interactions with the staff at BowView Manor have been consistently professional, helpful, caring and kind. I feel confident that my aunt, who is a resident, is safe and well cared for - with her needs and wants met. She is treated with kindness, patience, and respect, even on days when she may be difficult and/or confrontational. The social work team are skilled and patient and consistently go the “second mile”. Ryan has been a very much appreciated support to both my aunt and me. Everyone has been approachable and kind and I am advised immediately if there is a concern or problem. I would add that I participated in a caregiver’s support group – which was exceptionally well done and thoughtfully prepared for and managed each week. Thank you to these good people.
