My father was transferred to McGarrell Place in late November 2024 and passed away in Jan, 2025. He was in his late 90's and suffering from Vascular Dementia. Dad struggled through his time at McGarrell Place, as he was often restless and not completely happy. I thought Dad received very good care during his time at McGarrell, and that staff did the best they could under the circumstances. I thought they cared about how Dad was doing, and were responsive to his needs. Dr Lo was very responsive and helpful including joining our family for a Zoom meeting after hours (7:30 at night). Our family appreciated the care that McGarrell Place provided to our father.

In April 2024, my husband was accepted into the McGarrell residence. I am delighted that he was accepted into the residence, as it was the third on my list of potential homes. I have toured several homes in London but had not yet toured the McGarrell residence. Upon receiving the call, I toured the home and was pleasantly surprised by the friendliness, knowledge, and patience of my tour guide, Jennifer. The home itself was clean, and the staff and residents appeared to be pleasant and comfortable. Overall, my experience has been and continues to be excellent. While I acknowledge that there is always room for improvement, I have had some concerns about my husband’s care and the home maintenance. I have had to address these concerns with management on each occasion. Every time I have gone to management, I have been greeted graciously, listened to, and heard. I have received resolutions to my concerns. I acknowledge that the home is understaffed and that more needs to be done in terms of funding, staffing, and education. However, I am extremely grateful to management for addressing my every concern and giving me a listening ear. Thank you, Christen, Melissa, Joe, Lincy, Jennifer, Dahab, and Brandon, to name a few. My experience has shown me that the staff at the McGarrell residence is approachable. The personal support workers (PSWs), personal support assistants (PSAs), RN, Doctor, social workers, housekeeping team, and various other teams all deserve my appreciation for their hard work and dedication. They are truly amazing, and my heart is filled with gratitude for their efforts. I want to express my heartfelt thanks to Sharon, Sunila, Honey, Agustina, Alicia, Leaette, Effy, Emmanuel, Solomon, Georgette, Hope, Abby, Marilyn, Serienia, Alexia, June, Vana, Snookie, and Noorjhan, to name a few. My experience with them has shown me that they love what they do, and my loved one and I feel like part of the family. I believe that you all strive to do the best with the resources you have. I definitely will l recommend this home.

It's been 20 months to the day since my mother was arbitrarily transferred from hospital to mcgarrell. 606 days and nights, 1800 meals and diaper changes, 1200 snacks. I'll state now that for profit healthcare leads to added stress on everyone. I've watched staff burnout. 4 managers quit. Nurses with COVID testing negative ONCE back at work interacting with patients. Disease spreads rapidly. They hire temps to fill the shifts of all the staff isolating at home. Mom has had Delta and Omicron 5 in the home. I am the only primary caregiver to my mother. She is now suffering with dementia and is entirely dependant upon others. I began caring for her full time in 2017, in her home. I've seen every aspect of healthcare suffer degradation since that time. For profit nursing homes receive the same funding as public/municipal/private/and non profit homes. All are expected to follow the same guidelines, directives, and laws from the government, towards the same expected outcomes. Non profits spend everything on care. Private homes can be the best or worst. Municipal homes have local oversight. For profit homes are private corporations. Profit increases as staff productivity increases. The front line is part time. It's a brutal race to simply provide the minimum care required. Residents ask for help to go to the bathroom. They sometimes beg. Or cry. It triggers repetitive calling out for Nurse. Nurse. Nurse. Nurse. Nurse. It happens every day, several times. And the calls for help are usually just ignored. Holding a man's ✋ as he urinates at the table, ashamed, helpless, feeling abandoned, and less than deserving of dignity. As do I. Because I am my mother's primary caregiver. But I do advocacy for all, the staff and the residents. I run for help when I find someone fallen to the floor. Because insurance liabilities. I drove to Toronto to speak with Doug Ford. He refused. He cut oversight from nursing homes to cut costs. He will do the same with all healthcare in Ontario. Sure there's rules. But only once annual compliance inspections. Investigations are carried out by phone. Enforcement has been gutted. So when your loved one requires care, they will (you will) require a primary caregiver. For access. For oversight. And to keep your loved one from going mad in loneliness, despair, and a wet diaper, calling nurse. Nurse. Nurse. Nurse. Other than that, the residents in the psych ward are some of my best friends. I look forward to being able to visit. I appreciate the staff for doing their jobs under deadline, without adequate pay. But it's still getting worse. I'm tired of fighting the corporations, the health unit. Ontario health, and Premier Ford, AND our offensive and now invisible and silent "head doctor". And our condescending excuse for a Cabinet minister for Health. We're in trouble. The nursing home for profit model is a failure. Wear a n95 mask, don't kill us. Don't get sick and don't get old. We've gotta fix this *waves arms around* whole mess. Thanks for coming to my First of February discourse celebrating the life of the first Indian to explore the Himalayas.
