Recently the Seniors Advocate Dan Levitt released a report on financial abuse of seniors by some Independent Living facilities. This report hit the nail on the head and opened the door for media attention on one place in particular in Victoria I was involved with. I had been trying to get the story of families of this facility out there for well over a year, including contacting the Office of the Seniors Advocate. I really didn't expect it to go anywhere but then they released the report. When they released the report they contacted me directly to inform me of the report. Since then the media coverage on this particular facility has been amazing- and I'm sure this shorty will blow up in coming weeks, with stories of more facilities. I wasn't the only one to contribute to the report- there must have been hundreds. This report addressed a dozen issues and was supported by health minister Adrian Dix. Within a week, the provincial government committed to implementing the reports recommendations. Have faith- it takes time but Dan Levitt is taking his job seriously. Maybe the former advocate wasn't but this guy is.

I was advocating for my ex-husband when my children were frustrated dealing with a long-term care facility in which their dad had been accepted. The placement person at the facility told them the only room available would be one shared with a person with advanced dementia, who flicks the light switch on and off all night long. Our family knows that that would be an impossible situation for their dad. I contacted Isobel Mackenzie, the Seniors advocate, and suddenly within a couple of days a single room became available. Our family was deeply grateful for the intervention and the person in question lived out his life there, passing away just over a year ago.
