Review – Soins Palliatifs Gracia We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Marie-Josée Caron, one of the most compassionate and knowledgeable doctors we’ve ever met. We are deeply thankful that she was the last doctor to care for our mother before her passing. Dr. Caron took the time to explain every step, ensured we understood all our options, and treated our mom — and our family — with kindness and respect. Thank you, Dr. Caron, for your compassion and dedication. A special thank you as well to nurse Naima, who cared for our mom with such gentleness and warmth. Her empathy brought comfort to both our mother and our family during a very difficult time. Unfortunately, our experience with the head nurse at this facility was very different. Her approach lacked compassion and sensitivity to what we were going through. She appeared cold and dismissive, making critical decisions — such as choosing not to contact a doctor over the weekend while our mother was clearly in pain — without adequate communication or empathy. Instead of offering understanding, she implied that our mother complained more when family was present, which was deeply hurtful. This may have been due in part to a language barrier, as our mother spoke little French and many nurses refused or were unable to communicate in English. But regardless, compassion and communication should never depend on language. We were shocked by the lack of understanding during such a fragile moment in our lives. Families should never feel blamed or dismissed for advocating for their loved one’s comfort. A clearer, kinder explanation of procedures — rather than curt, bureaucratic responses — would have made a huge difference. Our mother suffered unnecessarily for nearly two days before a doctor was finally called to adjust her medication. Thankfully, Dr. Caron later heard our side of the story and took the time to listen. We strongly believe that the head nurse, Hélène, should undergo a sensitivity and communication review, as compassion is at the heart of palliative care. Administrative efficiency should never come before empathy and patient comfort.

My mother was in palliative care at Maison Gracia earlier in February 2024 at their former location on Bois de Boulogne Street, the Pavillon des Bâtisseurs. The facility was fine, despite being somewhat outdated and having a few poorly adapted rooms, such as being far from the main staff station. The staff had been hastily moved to accommodate someone else in the room where my mother was placed, and she had requested to be moved elsewhere. All this to say that when the decision was made to move her to palliative care, we didn't know that the facility would be relocating and returning to its former location at the CHSLD Notre-Dame-de-la-Merci, in the Charles Poissant Pavilion. This was very distressing for my mother, who was already receiving end-of-life care. If we had known, we would have chosen a different location to spare her all this unnecessary stress during this final stage of her life. Nevertheless, once she arrived at the Charles Poissant Pavilion, it was very good. There was a beautiful view of the river and it was much better suited to end-of-life care. Despite everything my mother had experienced at her previous facility, the team respected her wishes, understood her anxiety, and listened to her. A truly wonderful team, perfectly suited to the situation, with extensive experience in end-of-life care. A special mention to Nathalie, a palliative care nurse at Gracia, for giving my beloved mother all her love, attentive listening, and respect. And also to Hélène, the team leader, and the nurses, who listened to and respected my mother's wishes. Thank you all, the entire Gracia palliative care team—nurses, attendants, concierge, and everyone else—did an extraordinary job. My mother passed away on March 24, 2024, with dignity and with her needs carefully considered. Thank you, Catherine, her daughter.

My mother, Mrs. Lamarche, was lucky...yes, lucky enough to end her days in Gracia palliative care. From the moment she arrived on December 20, 2023, I met kind-hearted people. I immediately felt that Mom was in good hands and I was freed from a great deal of worry for her. A sincere thank you to the entire team for your dedication, great respect, availability, kindness, tenderness, and humanity towards Mom and thus towards us, the family. Mom left us on January 1, 2024, with dignity, surrounded by a wonderful team. I lack the words to express my gratitude and appreciation to all of you. Hélène Gravel
