About This Community

The Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care provides medical care and support to patients with serious, life-limiting illness in their own homes across Central Toronto and North York.

Senior Care Path Summary

The Temmy Latner Centre for Palliative Care is part of Sinai Health and offers palliative care services to patients in their own homes. The program is committed to respecting patients' unique needs, values and hopes, and providing guidance to help them face difficult decisions.

Patients can continue receiving life-prolonging treatment for their illness while receiving palliative care.

The centre's physicians work closely with Ontario Health at Home, the government agency that provides nurses, personal support workers (PSWs) and therapists for home visits.

The team also collaborates with the Paediatric Advanced Care Team at The Hospital for Sick Children for paediatric patients.

Services include treating pain and symptoms, helping patients understand illness progression and treatment choices, communicating with other specialists, and connecting patients to additional resources and supports.

The service area covers much of Central Toronto and North York. Physicians' visits are covered by OHIP or federal coverage, though not all home-care costs may be government-funded.

The centre accepts referrals from physicians and provides 24-hour, seven-day-a-week clinical coverage.

Unfortunately due to circumstances beyond their control the Physicians who helped our mother were only available to us in the final day of her life. They did however, listen to our needs and brought medication for us to use to make Mum more comfortable. They spoke with our family and expressed what to expect as Mum was dying and what they could do for us. We feel lucky to have had their assistance even for a short time.

The worst possible experience. A doctor came by to talk to my mother and me about my father on June 18th. For two hours she spoke in a very loud voice about the fact that she didn't believe my father had long to live and we had to prepare for this. My father, who had just returned home the day before, buoyed up by the hope that he had come home to recover, was lying in bed in the next room. I told the doctor that my father has very good hearing and was probably listening to everything she said. Her response? "Good. I hope he does." After she left, my father spent the rest of the day and night, mumbling, repeating much of what the doctor had said. Prior to that, and earlier that same day, he had been interested in watching TV, reading the newspaper with my mother, and talking about all of the things he hoped to do once he was able to get out of bed. He was awake until after 3 o'clock in the morning, very agitated, still repeating the doctor's words and ominous warnings. The next morning, at just after 5 o'clock, he began speaking again, still very agitated. I held his hand for only minutes before he began breathing very shallowly. I immediately called Temmy Latner's emergency line, as the doctor had instructed, should my father ever need urgent care. It took over 15 minutes for a doctor from the Centre to call back. In the meantime, Toronto Fire and paramedics had shown up, worked on him, and ultimately declared him dead. (If I had called them before calling the Temmy Latner Centre, I wouldn't have lost precious minutes.) My father came home with hope. The Temmy Latner Centre stripped it from him in just one visit. He died agitated and afraid. I wish I hadn't let them within 10 feet of my poor father. I will never forgive myself for allowing them into our house.

Absolutely deplorable service for a man who was palliative and not accorded the medication to die comfortably. No show Dr’s, prescriptions provide by Dr’s not provided for over 48 hours. Nurses expected in afternoon arriving at one in the morning. Absolutely DEPLORABLE service. I know BO it is free, but that doesn’t mean that people who cannot afford to pay for services should be treated in this undignified and cruel manner. If you can’t, or won’t do the job… Get Out Of The Way…!
